Interlochen Arts Academy (IAA) provides artistically gifted high school students pre-professional arts instruction, college preparatory education, and life skills development.

Interlochen Arts Camp

Job Description

Interlochen Center for the Arts is seeking to hire a Director of the Liberal Arts Division of Interlochen Arts Academy.

This position will oversee and develop the program and faculty of the Liberal Arts Division. The Liberal Arts Division includes: English, history, foreign language and English second language. This position reports to the Vice President-Education Programs, supervises faculty members in the division and works with other divisional leaders and directors.

The division director leads the Liberal Arts Division and deals with any issues regarding curriculum, faculty teaching assignments, faculty development and evaluation, grading disputes, and general parental or student concerns. The director makes decisions about curriculum, guest speakers, divisional budget use and hiring choices, which are done in conjunction with the VP for Education Programs

This full time administrative position reports to the Vice President for Education Programs and includes part-time (two or three classes) teaching responsibilities in history and or English as well as the Aesthetics course that is part of the Comparative Arts major.

During the Academy school year the Division Director is responsible for:

  • Providing innovative leadership in the direction, evaluation and development of the liberal arts program: curriculum, texts, resources and both real time and virtual learning experiences for students
  • Recruiting, hiring, orienting and evaluating all liberal arts faculty and staff
  • Working in a rich cross-disciplinary environment to align the liberal arts department with other academic and artistic disciplines
  • Furthering the professional growth of the department faculty
  • Creating and supporting interdisciplinary initiatives across the other academic and artistic divisions
  • Advancing new ideas and visions in a highly competitive international environment
  • Advocating and representing the liberal arts program to senior administration, alumni and donors
  • Monitoring and supporting the work of highly creative students with diverse learning styles
  • Developing and managing the annual departmental budget
  • Purchasing and distributing supplies for the department
  • Maintaining and updating all liberal arts equipment and supplies
  • Working with ICA leadership in presentations, public broadcasting and Interlochen College to build a virtual presence for the liberal arts program through broadcasting, podcasts, seminars and distributed media

All faculty are expected to work with the students outside their teaching responsibilities, compensating for parental absence and assisting the residence hall staff in the development of students’ total experience at Interlochen.

Qualifications

An advanced degree in English, history or a related field with proven leadership in teaching and administrative experience.

In addition, the Director must:

  • Possess significant knowledge of the trends, practices and pedagogies of the areas included in the Liberal Arts Division
  • Have a background, genuine interest in or connection to the arts and be interested in the connections between arts and academics
  • Possess proven skills in successful management of personnel
  • Be committed to professional development for teachers and self
  • Be interested in and willing to build strong networks and partnerships with the other educators in the liberal arts fields
  • Demonstrate exceptional written and spoken communication skills
  • Relate to and motivate students
  • Communicate effectively with students, parents and colleagues
