Job Description

Summary

The College of Arts & Sciences is seeking candidates for the position of Assistant Dean of the College of Arts & Sciences, a full-time staff position. The ideal candidate will have demonstrated leadership and management ability, excellent communication skills, maturity, patience, good attention to detail, and a strong work ethic. This is a 12 month position reporting to the Dean of the College of Arts & Sciences. 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following:

  • Oversee administrative operations for the college, ensuring operations run effectively and efficiently
  • Assist growth of academic programs by supporting strategic initiatives that leverage current industry trends and improve the quality of the student experience
  • Develop business plans, program budgets and analyze enrollment trends to ensure the quality of existing academic programs and to help strategically develop new programs at the graduate and undergraduate levels
  • Cultivate programmatic and institutional opportunities
  • Execute selected programmatic initiatives
  • Serve on various university and college committees
  • Supervise office staff
  • Maintain and enforce policies, procedures and academic standards
  • Oversee academic Honor Code process, including student violations (chair council hearings, adjudicate offences)
  • Oversee adjunct faculty in conjunction with department chairs (new hire proposals, training, performance assessment, faculty negations, etc.) 
  • Prepare analytic reports as justification for new faculty hires, programmatic initiatives or strategic planning 
  • Manage full-time and adjunct faculty load process 
  • Oversee salary and operational budgets for twelve departments under the direction of the dean
  • Provide academic and administrative oversight of course scheduling, insuring optimum use of faculty and resources 
  • Address student and faculty concerns not addressed at the instructional or departmental level
  • Provide administrative leadership for staff
  • Serve as the liaison for accreditation, ensuring SACS accreditation standards are met
  • Work with the college Board of Advisors 
  • Act on behalf of the dean when appropriate

Non-Essential Duties

  • Special projects and other duties may be assigned as needed.

Qualifications

Experience, Knowledge and Skills Required

  • Experience working in an administrative office at a college or university required, experience in an academic dean’s office preferred. 
  • Experience supervising staff in an office setting required
  • Bachelor’s degree required, master’s degree in an academic field preferred 
  • Proven attention to detail, ability to establish priorities and meet deadlines; strong follow-up and follow-through to completion skills necessary
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills
  • Proven ability to work autonomously  
  • Excellent written, verbal and interpersonal communication skills
  • Personal integrity, professionalism and sincere regard for academic integrity and intellectual property
  • Proven ability to maintain the utmost confidentiality
  • Proficiency in a higher education management system (Jenzabar preferred)
  • Experience using other higher education systems preferred (Raiser's Edge, Moodle, Blackboard, etc.)
  • Experience writing reports or proposals using institutional data 
  • Ability to work well with other offices and faculty to complete strategic projects

  • Talking: Frequently convey detailed or important instructions and ideas accurately, loudly, or quickly.
  • Lifting, Pulling, Pushing: Exert up to 50 pounds for force occasionally, and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.

Work Conditions

  • Work in office environment, involving contact with faculty, staff, students, parents, service providers and vendors.
  • Work has deadlines, multiple interruptions and may be stressful at times.
