Summary:  The Associate Director for International Admissions will lead campus efforts for the recruitment and admission of new international students and support their transition to the university. The candidate will work directly for the Director of Traditional Undergraduate Admissions as well as partner with the Director of the Center for International Education.

  Essential Functions:

  • Lead international recruitment efforts (80%)

    • Develop recruitment strategy, including annual goals, objectives and tactics, in partnership with Director of TUG Admissions and Director of CIE.

    • Execute recruitment strategies to attract international students

      • Serve as primary recruiter of international students;

      • Develop strategic marketing, recruitment, and communication plans for degree-seeking international students; this includes domestic and international recruitment travel;

      • Lead efforts on the development and maintenance of literature, web marketing, and other materials targeted toward the international student population;

      • Manage all day-to-day correspondence with prospective students, admitted students, and family members regarding admission questions, immigration issues, and follow-up for recruitment and enrollment activities; utilize various communication mediums including email, phone, and Skype;

      • Maintain accurate records of international student contacts and prepare regular reports concerning recruitment and admission activities;

      • Work and communicate effectively with internal and external constituents including but not limited to DHS, USCIS, SEVP, ELS Language Centers, high school college counselors, community and area organizations, and educational sponsors;

      • Review applications for admissibility within university standards and make admission decisions on first-year and transfer international applicants; review admitted student files for F-1 eligibility;

      • Maintain new student data as well as records for non-enrolled (no-show) students and prospective students;

    • Work with other units across campus to ensure recruitment success

      • Stay abreast of academic offerings, admission requirements, and admission processes; update media and materials as appropriate;

      • Utilize expertise of the Marketing and Community Relations office to ensure marketing and communications support for recruitment activity

      • Partner with adult undergraduate and graduate admissions offices to accurately and adequately represent those areas as opportunities arise

  • Coordinate the orientation and transition of internationals students to Queens (20%) including:

    • Prepare/disseminate pre-arrival materials;

    • Respond to questions regarding housing, immunizations, orientations, academics, etc. prior to arrival;

    • Coordinate new student orientation each semester;

    • Coordinate with other campus offices to ensure all appropriate preparations for international student arrival have been made;

    • Evaluate orientation program each semester to ensure that the program is meeting student needs;

    • Partner with the CIE to conduct 2-3 cultural events at the start of each term to aid the students with their adjustment and integration;

Qualifications

Experience, Knowledge and Skills Required

  • Prior experience in international recruiting in a higher education setting strongly preferred.

  • Bachelor’s degree with at least three years of admissions and outreach experience, or equivalent required. Master’s degree preferred.

  • International travel and/or living experience required.

  • Familiarity with F-1 visa regulations and immigration procedures.

  • Ability to travel within the U.S. and internationally via a variety of modes of transportation (up to 30% of time).

  • Proficiency in one or more foreign languages strongly preferred.

  • Ability to load and transport admissions materials, displays and other equipment.

  • Evening and weekend hours required to fulfill this position’s goals, especially during the travel season. 

  • Strong cross-cultural interpersonal and writing skills, including public speaking skills and the ability to present the University in a positive way to diverse populations.

  • Excellent oral and written communications skills and organizational skills are required.

  • Sensitivity to issues related to the recruitment and retention of international students is required.

  • Ability to work and communicate across a variety of cultures is required.

  • Must have the ability to meet established goals, objectives, and deadlines.

  • Familiarity with international enrollment trends and sources of international enrollment data required.

  • Familiarity with a variety of foreign educational systems and scholarship programs strongly preferred.

  • Familiarity with international student adjustment issues and mediation strategies strongly preferred.

  • Computer skills are required.

  • Database knowledge is preferred.

  • Web maintenance proficiency and understanding of marketing basics are preferred.

  • Work in office environment, involving contact with faculty, staff, students, parents, service providers and vendors.
  • Work has deadlines, multiple interruptions, high volume and may be stressful at times.
