UMI is the largest independent African American religious publisher.  Founded in 1970, UMI was the first company to create contextual resources for African American churches and denominations, and has thousands of church customers.  UMI books, magazines, video, and children’s resources have been used by millions and the company is the publishing partner for many African American denominations.  UMI has published books by leading pastors and many others in our community, and has been a publishing and distribution partner with many other publishers.  We are headquartered in the Chicago area, just 35 minutes from downtown, in a 50,000 square foot facility uniquely built for us in a modern, suburban office park environment convenient to shopping, restaurants, and several upscale diverse communities in the South suburbs.

Job Description

The position is responsible for managing creation and development of all of UMI’s youth content offerings and UMI’s Youth Media Content team. Also responsible for seeking out new opportunities and partnerships for UMI’s youth publications and audience, coordinating expansion into multi-platform consumer and digital product development, curation, and distribution.

  • Manage UMI Youth Media Content team, overseeing youth product development.
  • Content creation oversight and publishing strategist for youth products and content: charts vision for youth audience leading the team to high levels of engagement in print, online—including mobile, web, and social media, and in live events.
  • Engage key leaders, influencers, and foster relationships.
  • Seek out new opportunities and partnerships for youth publications for UMI to expand in consumer and digital arenas.

Qualifications

  • Must have an excellent command of the English language, including: grammatical skills, vocabulary, punctuation, sentence structure, writing, researching, and organizing ideas.
  • Must have in-depth knowledge of Biblical content, including the ability to use Bible Commentaries, Dictionaries, and other resources.
  • A bachelor’s degree is required from a relevant field (writing, communications, theology, et al).
  • Some years of training from seminary, church-affiliated school, etc. is preferred.
  • Experience in the business aspects of publishing, including marketing and managing a departmental budget.
  • Excellent writing, speaking, and organizational skills.
  • A working knowledge of the Bible and evangelical Christian culture.
  • Must be in agreement with UMI’s corporate values and its doctrinal statement.
  • Must work well with a team and be willing to lead and learn.
