Job Description

Refinery29, the leading authority in fashion and lifestyle, is in search of a Deputy Editor, Entertainment and Culture to develop and lead our team and programming to the next frontier.

This crucial role requires a well-trained editor obsessed with driving the conversation—and amplification—across all platforms with smart, opinionated, high-performing content and the voices behind it. The Deputy Editor, Entertainment and Culture, will discover, assign, and edit high-quality, high-performing original posts.

Our ideal candidate has a strong Twitter presence and comes from a well-regarded and highly-trafficked entertainment and/or culture site. She/he has an incredible network of established writers and PR contacts in the entertainment industry, a lightening-fast metabolism for the internet news cycle, and a passion for creating engaging, SMART content that always rises to the top.


RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Transform the R29 Entertainment and Culture vertical into a best-in-class, 24/7 editorial operation & experience.
  • Expertly conceive, assign, package, and edit 20-25 posts a day produced by the team.
  • Constantly challenge the team to conceive and execute well-written, next-generation content that we want to discuss, follow, and share on and offline.
  • Manage a staff of 6 (editors, producers and writers)
  • Make smart assignments to both staff and freelance writers in both New York and LA.
  • Manage our West Coast Editor who oversees our weekend coverage
  • Work with the high level PR contacts to score big-name talent for features.
  • Help grow R29’s presence in the Hollywood PR community on both coasts.
  • Cement R29’s place as the LEADING SOURCE of informative, well-written, opinionated, and sharable content. 
  • Ensure that the site reaches, and often exceeds, all monthly and annual traffic goals so that the team has the freedom to innovate and challenge themselves, our audience, and think GIANT PICTURE.
  • Partner with our marketing and analytics teams to consistently ensure adherence to best practices, emerging editorial strategies, and traffic/audience development tactics.
  • Constantly iterate, experiment, and improve ideas, concepts, processes, and workflow.
  • Evangelize that we’re always in a state of agile development with our content; develop strategies and train team members to constantly think this way.
  • Ensure that editorial integrity, ethics, accuracy, voice, and style are first and foremost, and that the editorial quality for which Refinery29 is known never suffers.

Qualifications

  • A minimum of 5 years of editorial experience at a digital media company
  • Team management experience
  • A background in Entertainment and Culture realm is essential
  • An ability to edit and package stories, well-versed in digital strategy
  • A broad and proven network of exceptional writers, editors, and contributors
