Summary:  The Residence Life/Student Life Intern is an opportunity to learn about and gain hand-on experience in the fun and exciting world of residence life and student life for an outstanding private, Presbyterian-affiliated, comprehensive university in vibrant Charlotte, NC.

 

A comprehensive Intern Training Plan will be developed and closely monitored to ensure the experience is rewarding and enriching as you pursue your goal of a career in higher education within Residence Life and/or Student Activities.  The expected time commitment of this internship is 25 hours per week.  This is a 12-month internship position.

 

The Intern reports to the directors of Residence Life and Student Activities. 

 

In addition to learning and preparing for a career in Residence Life and/or Student Activities, this unpaid internship opportunity offers a furnished apartment with utilities, University meal plan, graduate tuition remission for up to 6 credit hours per semester and free fitness center access. 

 

Some of the responsibilities this internship may participate in:

 

    • Residence Life –

      • Oversee daily operation and functionality of HBO Residence Hall (three floors with 118 beds total).

      • Supervisor and mentor four Resident Assistants assigned to HBO. 

      • Adjudicate judicial cases that originate from HBO and/or its residents.

      • Attend and participate in assigned meetings (including, but not limited to: various RA meetings, Residence Life Team meetings, hall meetings, Division wide events, one-on-one supervision meetings)

      • Perform administrative duties as deemed necessary by Residence Life, including but not limited to the distribution of memos and check-in/check-out procedures, health and safety inspections, survey administrations and other paperwork as assigned by supervisor.

    • Student Activities –

      • Oversee campus evening and weekend programs to ensure consistent student engagement and vibrant campus community and culture. 

      • Oversee student communication, including coordinating campus student e-newsletter, presence on social media outlets, and oversee Student Activities publicity boards and campus calendars.  Supervise student media interns as needed to assist with communication strategies.

      • Help develop and implement programs and activities for the Greek Community.

Qualifications

Experience, Knowledge and Skills Required

  • §  Two to five years of professional experience in Student Affairs or a related field (may be gained through undergraduate participation as a Resident Advisor, club or Greek Life participation. 
  • §  Desire to pursue an internship to gain skills, knowledge and abilities to seek a career in Student Life / Residence Life for a college or university.
  • Minimum of a Bachelor's Degree or the equivalent in experience and education;

  • Demonstrated track record of actively promoting diversity and inclusion of all students.

  • Demonstrated organization and planning skills; strong follow-up and follow-through skills to ensure completion of goals and objectives.

  • Must be able to work in a fast-paced environment with demonstrated ability to effectively prioritize multiple competing tasks and demands.

  • Computer proficiency (Microsoft Office preferred, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook).

  • Flexibility to regularly serve on evenings and weekends.

  • Willingness and commitment to live on-campus and serve as a positive role model for students.

  • Physical Requirements (with or without reasonable accommodation)

    • Eye-Hand Coordination: Requires hand-eye coordination and manual dexterity sufficient to operate a computer keyboard, copier, calculator and other office equipment, 75-100% of the time.

    • Talking:  Especially where one must frequently convey detailed or important instructions or ideas accurately, loudly, or quickly, 75-100% of the time.

    • Repetitive Motion:  Movements frequently and regularly required using the wrists, hands, and/or fingers, 50-75% of the time.

    • Average Hearing:   Able to hear average or normal conversations and receive ordinary information, 75-100% of the time.

    • Average Visual Abilities:  Average, ordinary, visual acuity necessary including close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus, 75-100% of the time.

    • Physical Strength:  Will regularly be required to sit, use hands to finger, handle or feel objects, tools and controls reach with hands and arms.  Must be able to stand, walk, stoop, kneel, or crouch.  Must regularly lift and/or move up to 20 pounds, and occasionally lift and/or move up to 30 pounds.

Work Conditions

  • Work in office environment, involving contact with faculty, staff, students, parents, service providers and vendors.
  • Work has deadlines, multiple interruptions, high volume and may be stressful at times.
