Job Description

Summary:  The Director of Community Programs works within the Knight School of Communication to develop and coordinate programmatic opportunities for students, faculty and community members that are aligned with the School’s mission to raise digital and media literacy across the greater Charlotte area.

 

Essential Functions:

  • Work with the dean, the Knight School, and university faculty and students to successfully achieve the goals of Knight grant initiatives.

  • Work with the dean to build sustainable community partnerships (with the libraries, schools, the city, and other civic agencies) focused on digital literacy; locate and build new strategic partnerships in the local information ecosystem.

  • Coordinate and carry out community events, including neighborhood communication workshops, library and public school events, the annual Best Minds gathering on digital and media literacy, and other civically oriented digital media literacy activities.

  • Seek out and respond to campus and community digital and media literacy learning and teaching opportunities.

  • Coordinate teaching and learning sessions, internships, service projects and special activities that enable the school to broaden its reach and knowledge in digital and media literacy.

  • Serve as first contact and ongoing program coordinator for such efforts, including maintaining records, managing resources, and identifying future opportunities.

  • Assist the Knight School in developing its website (Digital Charlotte) as needed.

  • Assess and develop reports for the Knight School in response to requests concerning grant initiatives.

  • Coordinate with internship and career services to develop key industry pipelines for communication majors.

  • Coordinate with marketing and external relations to organize and promote Knight grant initiatives.

 

Secondary Functions:

  • Develop and maintain effective working relationships and ongoing coordination support with administration, faculty and students across the university.

  • Help recruit undergraduate students, connect students to the School’s digital media literacy initiatives, and develop and oversee the Knight Scholars program.

  • Identify community resources.

  • Represent the Knight School at events related to grant initiatives.

  • Work with the Knight School on new and ongoing civic oriented projects as needed.

Qualifications

Skills/Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent combination of education and experience

  • Minimum one year of professional experience working with the public; event planning and marketing experience a plus

  • Excellent communication skills (verbal, written, digital, interpersonal) and the ability to quickly establish and maintain strong rapport with multiple constituencies in order to effectively collaborate and build partnerships inside and outside of the University

  • Demonstrated organizational and planning skills, including proven expertise in follow-up and follow-through to completion within established time frames

  • A high level of personal integrity and professionalism

  • Strong work ethic and initiative

  • Ability to problem solve and research issues as needed

  • Ability to quickly learn and assimilate new systems and information

  • Must be able to work in a fast-paced environment with demonstrated ability to effectively prioritize multiple competing tasks and demands

  • Work in office environment, involving contact with faculty, staff, students, parents, service providers and vendors.
  • Work has deadlines, multiple interruptions, high volume and may be stressful at times.
